T'ai Chi Qi Gong Breathing Pattern

  1. Inhale as hands come up front of body. Exhale as hands descend.

  2. Repeat.

  3. Repeat.

  4. Inhale as hands go out to side at shoulder level (palms down). Exhale as hands lower 2-3 inches.

  5. Inhale as hands swing out to front and cross so that palms face you. Exhale as rotate (thumbs turn underneath) so palms face out then roll toward you under wrists and end with palms facing sky and away from body. Sink as hands come in to body.

  6. Inhale and rise as hands (still palm up) come up to waist. Exhale and sink as they return to position away from and in front of body.

  7. Inhale and rise as hands (still palm up) swing back out to sides (shoulder level). Exhale as hands lower 2-3 inches.

  8. Inhale and sink as hands form loose fists and pivot at elbow toward head. Exhale and rise as fists open (palms away from head) and return on same path to sides.

  9. Repeat previous inhale movement (inhale and rise as hands form loose fists and pivot at elbow toward head). Exhale as hands extend overhead with palms facing sky.

  10. Inhale as hands descend to waist, crossing and uncrossing at the wrists. Exhale as hands clasp in front of abdomen (male holds right index fingertip on top of left ring knuckle, right thumb tip on bottom of left ring finger knuckle; left middle fingertip touches left thumb tip--female holds left index fingertip on top of right ring knuckle, left thumb on bottom of right ring finger knuckle; right middle fingertip touches right thumb tip).

  11. Inhale as body turns toward left. Exhale as body turns back to front.

  12. Inhale as body turns toward right. Exhale as body turns back to front.

  13. Repeat #11.

  14. Repeat #12.

  15. Inhale as hands come up body (same as #1). Exhale as body bends at waist (knees straight) and palms try to touch earth.

  16. Inhale as hips lower so body is bent at knees with left hand inside right when wrists are crossed. Exhale as body straightens and left palm tries to touch sky and right palm tries to touch earth. Look at top hand.

  17. Inhale as knees bend and right hand is inside left when wrists are crossed. Exhale as body straightens and right palm tries to touch sky and left palm tries to touch earth. Again look at top hand.

  18. Inhale as right hand descends and left rises so that wrists are crossed (palms facing you with left on the inside). Exhale and sink as wrists rotate and roll (same as #5, only palms end near waist rather than away from body).

  19. Inhale and rise as hands rise (same as #1). Exhale as hands descend (same as #1). Rub palms together.
